Can Stress Cause Neck Pain?

Can Stress Cause Neck Pain?

Anxiety and stress have huge effects on the body. Persistent stress and anxiety can cause neck pain.  Though not everyone may experience neck pain from stress, stress may cause pain and tightness in another part of one’s body.

Tension is a main source of neck pain.  If you experience intense anxiety, your muscles may significantly tense up, causing you pain.

Is Feeling of Numbness a Sign of Anxiety?

There is such thing as emotional numbness. Though there are varieties of health conditions that can cause physical and emotional numbness, the most common cause is anxiety.

Anxiety Increases Risk of Neck Pain

There are many factors that can increase the risk for neck pain. Herniated discs, whiplash, or arthritis can cause constant neck pain.  Anxiety can increase the pain associated with those injuries.

General Neck Pain versus Anxiety Pain

Those with anxiety may experience more severe neck discomfort than those without anxiety.  General neck pains range from mild to moderate.  Sitting all day in chairs, sleeping in an uncomfortable bed, stooping down often, among many other things are the typical causes of general neck pains.  People without anxiety can get over the pain easily.  They may pass this off as normal pain.  But for those with anxiety, who are unusually sensitive to body sensations, may be unable to think of anything else.  The degree of mental energy that is placed on it increases the pain, thus promoting further anxiety.

Controlling Neck Pain from Anxiety

When muscle tension is brought on by anxiety, consider doing the following:

–    Hot bath or hot shower:  Ease tense muscles in a hot bath or hot shower.  It is best to make the hot bath longer to warm up your neck muscles.  Heat causes your muscles to relax.

–    Exercise:  Exercises can improve muscle tension.

–    Massage: Although you can do a self-massage, asking another one to massage your muscles can greatly help release tension and stress in your body that causes this type of neck pain.

These approaches reduce the effects of muscle tension in your body.  Aside from that, you should also make sure that you are always aware of your posture.
