Medical-certification requirements depend on your driving category. Non-excepted CDL/CLP drivers and certain non-CDL commercial drivers need an exam. Check your licensing state’s instructions.
Federally required DOT physicals must be performed by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry. The exam includes a health history, vision and hearing checks, a physical examination and urinalysis. The urinalysis is not a drug screen.

Beyond Wellness Chiropractic Center reports DOT examination results to FMCSA’s National Registry. For federally required examinations, results must be reported by midnight local time on the next calendar day after the examination is completed, including unqualified results.
For eligible CDL/CLP drivers, FMCSA transmits the certification information to the licensing state. Submission does not guarantee immediate state posting or prevent every licensing delay. Medical qualification depends on the current FMCSA standards and your individual health history. The former federal vision exemption program has been replaced by the alternative vision standard, which uses Form MCSA-5871 when applicable. Insulin-treated diabetes is evaluated under its own standard using Form MCSA-5870, rather than the former diabetes exemption process. Other conditions may involve a separate exemption process. Call ahead to discuss the records needed for your examination; documentation does not guarantee certification.

We provide copies of your DOT medical certificate after a qualifying examination. Keep a copy for your records. For CDL/CLP drivers in NRII states, the electronic state record is the official record; motor carriers generally verify it through the licensing state’s motor vehicle record.
