DOT Drug Testing

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires individuals and private corporations to undergo urine drug testing. The law requires employees in safety-sensitive positions to participate in the DOT Drug Testing Program. The DOT requires drug screenings to ensure you are able to safely perform your job.

Safety-Sensitive Positions

  • School bus drivers
  • Pilots
  • Truck drivers
  • Subway operators
  • Train engineers
  • Aircraft maintenance crew
  • Armed transit security personnel
  • Pipeline emergency response crew
  • Ship captains
  • Etc.

DOT drug tests can detect any of the following substances:

  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamine
  • Methamphetamine
  • MDMA
  • MDEA
  • MDA
  • Opiates/Morphine
  • Heroin
  • Codeine
  • Phencyclidine

When can I be tested?

The frequency and timing of your drug screening depend on your state’s regulations and regulations set by your employer. You may also be required under the following circumstances:

  • Pre-employment
  • Post-accident
  • Return-to-duty
  • Reasonable suspicion/cause
  • Follow-up
  • Random

What about prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs?

If you are taking any over-the-counter drugs or prescription medications, you should write down all medications on the chain of custody form after your visit. The Medical Review Officer may contact you to verify any medications if your drug screening results are positive.
