DOT Alcohol Testing (BAT)

Alcohol screening tests for the DOT can be taken by either a breath or saliva test. When the DOT requires an alcohol test, the breath alcohol technician will record the results using a three-part DOT Alcohol Testing Form. First, the screening test is performed. If this test has a positive result (an alcohol concentration of 0.20 or greater), a confirmation breath alcohol test is required within 15 minutes. The results will be printed in triplicate, and the confirmation will also be required as a print-out. A violation of 0.040 or greater requires an evaluation by a substance abuse professional as well as return-to-duty and a follow-up process.
