– Walking on hard surfaces
– Wrong type of footwear or inadequate padding during sports activities
– Over-exertion
– Insufficient rest periods during physical activities
Other Causes
– Swelling muscles because of overuse
– Tiny fractures in the lower leg bones
– Flat Feet
– Weak muscles of the hips
– Weak low back
Identifying Shin Splints
If you have pain in your shins, it does not always mean that you have shin splints. There are other conditions that are commonly mistaken as shin splints. Stress fractures are one common cause of shin pain.
If you press your shin, and you can immediately feel the sharp pain on a definite spot, it is likely that you have a stress fracture. Also, you usually feel better in the morning if you have stress fractures. Because the bone rested over night. Shin splints are extremely painful when you try to lift and flex your foot.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care does not only treat shin splints, it also prevents occurrences in the future.
Since the musculoskeletal system and the entire body are interconnected, spine adjustments can positively affect other body parts, like shins. A chiropractor can adjust the ankle and foot to treat your shin splints.
The chiropractor will release the tension on the muscles to rid the pain. By applying gentle tension to the involved muscles along with specific movements, chiropractors will identify the muscles involved. This will lead to a restoration of muscles and ligaments to their normal state.
Your chiropractor will also give you advice and stretches in order to avoid a recurrence.
Shin splints usually improve with just a few treatments, regardless of the length of time the patient has had the problem. They are often caused by improper biomechanics of the knee and foot. Misalignment of the hip and ankle may also be a cause. The biomechanical problem of the ankles and pelvis can be evaluated and assessed by chiropractors.
