CHIROPRACTIC FAQ

Questions About Chiropractic Care

FAQ

Chiropractic care focuses on assessing and managing musculoskeletal concerns. A visit may involve manual treatment, exercise guidance or referral, depending on the findings and your preferences.

Care does not automatically eliminate the need for medicines or surgery. Use these questions to discuss options, risks and costs with your clinician.

Chiropractic and Medical Care

Chiropractic and medical care can have different roles. Neither should be described as universally better or safer. The appropriate choice depends on the diagnosis, proposed treatment and individual risks.

Keep your clinicians informed about all treatments and medicines. Medication decisions belong with an appropriately authorized prescriber.

Chiropractic Education & Training

Chiropractors complete a Doctor of Chiropractic program and must meet licensing requirements. Chiropractic training and scope of practice differ from those of an MD or DO.

Chiropractic Education Process

Chiropractic education includes health sciences and clinical training. A comparison of classroom hours alone does not establish that different professional degrees or scopes of practice are equivalent.

Check current licensing requirements and practitioner status with the North Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Ask what additional training is relevant to the specific service you are considering.

Common Conditions Treated by Chiropractors

Back Pain

Spinal manipulation may offer modest benefit for some low-back-pain conditions. It is one option among several, and an individual response cannot be predicted from an unsupported percentage claim. Review the NCCIH evidence summary.

Neck Pain

Neck pain has different causes. Discuss the diagnosis and the benefits, risks and alternatives of any proposed manual treatment. New symptoms after significant trauma need appropriate medical assessment first.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries need an assessment to identify the tissues involved and any activity restrictions. A care plan should match the injury; chiropractic treatment cannot guarantee faster recovery or an earlier return to sport.

Headaches

Headache treatment depends on the diagnosis. Evidence for one headache type does not establish benefit for every type, and complementary care should not delay medical evaluation of new or concerning symptoms.

Chiropractic Techniques & Procedures

Ask what a proposed technique involves, why it is suitable and how improvement will be measured. The plan should account for your health history, symptoms and preferences.

Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation applies a controlled force to a spinal joint. It is not appropriate for every condition. Significant trauma requires assessment for serious injury before routine manual treatment.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft-tissue approaches may include massage or stretching when suitable. Ask about the goal of the technique and report discomfort or worsening symptoms.

Exercise & Rehabilitation

Exercise guidance should match your abilities and diagnosis. Ask for clear instructions, progression and a plan for reassessment rather than assuming one exercise routine suits everyone.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, discuss musculoskeletal symptoms and any proposed chiropractic treatment with your prenatal clinician. Suitability and precautions need individual review.

Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Ask about options for pregnancy-related discomfort. Chiropractic treatment does not guarantee an easier delivery or reposition a baby as an established obstetric treatment. Concerns about fetal position or birth planning belong with your prenatal team.

Research on spinal manipulation during pregnancy is limited. Tell both clinicians about pregnancy-related concerns and discuss benefits, risks and alternatives before treatment. Continue your prenatal care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Temporary soreness can occur. Serious adverse effects have also been reported, although they are rare and their frequency is not well established. Ask about your individual risks, including those associated with neck manipulation. See the NCCIH safety information.

Evidence and expected benefit vary by condition and technique. Ask which research applies to your diagnosis and how your response will be reviewed. Chiropractic care should not be treated as a universal substitute for medical care.

Check licensure, relevant training and experience. Ask how the clinician explains findings, costs, treatment options and reasons for referral. Recommendations and reviews describe experiences but do not guarantee an outcome.

Checking credentials

Use the North Carolina licensing board to check professional status. Confirm office details and appointment availability directly with the practice.

Follow aftercare instructions tailored to your condition and treatment. Ask which activities are appropriate and what symptoms should prompt contact with the clinician. A walk or bike ride is not suitable advice for every injury.

Visit frequency should reflect your condition, goals and response. Ask why a schedule is proposed, when progress will be reviewed and when visits may be reduced or stopped. There is no universal monthly maintenance requirement.

Chiropractic care may not be suitable for patients with herniated or slipped discs, arthritis, fractures, severe osteoporosis, numbness, tingling, loss of strength, cancer in the spine or a known bone abnormality in the upper neck.

Some muscle and joint symptoms may be suitable for chiropractic care after assessment. For appointment questions, call 704-461-1836 or visit our contact page.
