Menstrual Cramps (PMS) and Acupuncture
Many women experience menstrual cramps with their monthly cycle. Typically, cramps occur in the lower abdomen or back. Many people are surprised to find out acupuncture can relieve menstrual cramps.
The pain felt during menstruation is called dysmenorrhea. You may wonder why you have to experience the pain in the first place. It lies in the fact that the uterus must shed its natural lining every month. This job of the uterus requires its muscles to narrow or contract. When it contracts, blood vessels that supply the uterus become compressed. This, in turn, reduces the blood flow bringing about the pain. In some cases, the hormonal change may cause severe contractions, causing a more painful period.
Symptoms and Causes of Menstrual Cramps
- Pain in your abdomen
- Pressure in your abdomen
- Pain in your hips, lower back, and inner thighs
In cases of severe cramps, symptoms may include:
- Upset stomach, usually with vomiting or nausea
- Loose stools
Some women can experience the pain in the lower abdomen, back or both. It may also be felt in the legs. Muscle spasm and stiffness are the most frequently experienced symptoms of menstrual pain.
Muscle contractions in the uterus are the culprit for menstrual cramps. Strong contractions during the menstrual cycle can press against nearby blood vessels. It suddenly blocks the supply of oxygen to the uterus, causing the pain and cramping.
Expect mild cramps, bloating, or irritability. However, disabling cramps, severe fatigue, and heavy bleeding may require medical attention.
If the cramps are due to the menstrual cycle, it is called primary dysmenorrhea. However, if there is a problem in the reproductive organs that causes the cramping, doctors call it secondary dysmenorrhea.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – is a bacteria caused infection in the uterus. It can spread to other reproductive organs or genital systems.
- Endometriosis – this is a condition in which the tissue lining is found outside of the uterus.
- Stenosis – The narrowing of the cervix can be caused by scarring or a lack of estrogen after menopause.
- Fibroids – are a benign tumor of muscular and fibrous tissues.
Without risky medications and side effects, acupuncture works naturally to reduce menstrual pain, according to a recent study. It reduces pain from both primary and secondary dysmenorrhea.
Certain acupuncture points regulate blood flow through the abdominal cavity and relax the nervous system. It can help to ease muscle contractions. Research studies reveal that acupuncture is just as effective as medications used for reducing inflammation and pain.
In addition to relieving pain, acupuncture may lead to a better sleep and better digestion.
Aside from acupuncture, you also need to:
- Refrain from consuming large amounts of caffeine and salty foods.
- Avoid over fatigue. Take rest periods.
- Stay away from tobacco and alcohol.
- Get a massage on your lower back and abdomen.
- Exercise regularly
