Five Practical Ways to Stay Active at Work
December 21, 20233 Questions About Acupuncture: Benefits, Evidence and Safety
June 19, 2024Acupuncture is an option some people consider for pain and other symptoms. Deciding whether it is suitable involves more than how popular it is: the condition being treated, evidence, practitioner qualifications and possible risks all matter.
1. Use has increased, but popularity is not a success rate
NCCIH reports that 2.2% of U.S. adults used acupuncture in 2022, compared with 1.0% in 2002, based on the National Health Interview Survey. Those figures describe use, not the proportion of patients who improved.
2. Evidence depends on the condition
Research suggests acupuncture may help some pain conditions, including certain cases of back or neck pain and knee osteoarthritis. Results differ between conditions and studies. A general success percentage should not be used to predict an individual’s response, and evidence for one condition does not establish a benefit for another.
3. Ask about safety and technique
Acupuncture uses fine needles; sensations and comfort vary. Sterile, single-use needles and appropriate training are important. Side effects and, with improper delivery, serious complications such as infection or organ injury can occur. Share your health history and medicines and ask about any precautions relevant to you.
4. Confirm the plan and cost
Ask what the proposed treatment addresses, how progress will be assessed and when to reconsider it. Insurance benefits differ by plan and condition, so confirm coverage and fees in advance. Acupuncture should not delay medical evaluation or replace a necessary prescribed treatment.
