Sleep Apnea and Driving

As you may be aware, the FMCSA requires medical examiners to assess for sleep apnea. There are a number of effects sleep apnea has on the body.  Why is FMCSA so concerned about sleep apnea?  For one, the body isn’t getting enough oxygen for it to function properly.  Not getting enough oxygen can have life long effects on the human body.  Here is just a small list of what this can cause:

  • Heart Attack
  • Irregular Heartbeat
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Seizures
  • Day time sleepiness
  • Eye problems

More Information

There are two factors of sleep apnea: body mass index and neck measurement.  If these factors are higher than they should be, further testing is required. It is up to the driver to schedule a sleep apnea test. If the test is positive, the driver must use a CPAP machine.  Bring your thirty day usage report with you to the medical examiner that certified you.  The medical examiner will then update your DOT medical card to reflect a longer expiration date.  If you tested negative, bring your results with you to the medical examiner that certified you.  The medical examiner will then change the expiration date on your DOT medical card.  At Beyond Wellness Chiropractic Center, P.C., our chiropractor is a certified medical examiner. This means he is registered with the FMCSA and is allowed to perform DOT physicals on all CDL and non CDL drivers. Call our office today to schedule your next DOT physical.
