Spinal Decompression

Back or neck pain has several possible causes. Persistent or worsening symptoms need assessment; pain alone does not show that a disc needs decompression. Discuss the diagnosis and reasonable options with your treating clinician.

Research findings do not establish that decompression will heal a disc or prevent future injury. The 2010 retrospective study previously cited here reported an association between disc height and pain improvement; the authors called for a randomized controlled trial.

Guidance also differs from promotional claims: NICE guidance for low back pain advises against traction for low back pain with or without sciatica. Ask how the evidence applies to the treatment proposed for you.

What to Expect?

The office uses a treatment table and harness to apply cycles of stretching and relaxation. Before treatment, ask about positioning, session length, potential discomfort and reasons to stop.

Do not assume that discomfort will disappear after several visits or that a fixed number of sessions will heal a disc. Review your response and the plan with the treating clinician. Report new or worsening symptoms promptly.

You may not be a good candidate for spinal decompression therapy if you:

• Are pregnant

• Have a broken vertebrae

• Have had spinal fusion

• Are a patient with artificial disc, or other implants in the spine

• Have had a failed back surgery

• Gone through multiple surgeries without recovery or pain improvement

• If you have osteoporosis or osteopenia

• Have a spinal tumor or infection

• If you are taking blood thinners

Dr. Kevin Lyons can discuss your symptoms and whether decompression or another approach is suitable. Ask about realistic goals, alternatives, expected costs and how progress will be reviewed.
