Truck driver proudly displays his DOT Physical Medical Certificate - Road-ready and compliant!
A DOT physical evaluates whether a driver meets the medical qualification standards that apply to their work. Good preparation helps the examiner understand your health history and reduces avoidable delays. It does not guarantee certification, and you should answer the medical-history questions accurately.
At Beyond Wellness Chiropractic Center, a DOT physical costs $85. A drug test is an additional $85. The urine test used during the medical examination is not automatically a DOT drug test; drug testing is a separate process.
Choose your appointment type, call 704-461-1836, or email admin@beyondwellnesscc.com. Our office is at 5035 W. W.T. Harris Blvd, Suite A, Charlotte, NC 28269. Call or email to arrange a drug screen or ask which records to bring.
Medical-certification requirements depend on the vehicle, driving activity and driver category. Non-excepted CDL and CLP drivers need medical certification, and certain non-CDL commercial drivers do as well. Excepted driving categories have different requirements. For a federally required DOT examination, use a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
Keep taking prescribed medication as directed by your treating clinician. Do not hide a diagnosis or change treatment to influence an examination result. Current examination forms are available from FMCSA; the office can explain which parts you need to complete.
The examiner reviews your health history, checks vision and hearing, measures blood pressure and pulse, performs a physical examination, and reviews the required urinalysis. Additional information or evaluation may be needed before a certification decision can be made. The examiner considers the applicable standards and your individual findings.
A certificate may be valid for up to 24 months, but some medical conditions or applicable standards require a shorter period. An examination can also result in a finding that the driver is not medically qualified. There is no preparation shortcut that guarantees a passing result or a two-year certificate.
Medical examiners must report examination results to FMCSA by midnight local time on the next calendar day after the examination is completed. North Carolina receives electronic medical-certification information for eligible CDL and CLP drivers through NRII. Electronic reporting does not mean the state record updates instantly, and self-certifying your driving category remains a separate step.
Non-CDL drivers who are required to be medically certified have different paper-certificate responsibilities. Read our North Carolina medical certificate and NRII guide for the distinctions, current paper-copy guidance and steps to take if a record has not updated.
No. The medical examination’s urinalysis and a DOT drug test are different procedures. Your employer may separately require drug testing. Beyond Wellness charges $85 for the physical and an additional $85 for a drug test. See the U.S. DOT rule on separating DOT testing from other testing.
Check the expiration date on your certificate and arrange any follow-up requested by your medical examiner. Leave time to obtain records or address an unresolved condition before your current certification expires. For appointments and preparation questions, contact Beyond Wellness Chiropractic Center.
